Representatives of the Institute for Human Rights and Equality of the Turkish Republic were on March 6 and 7, 2019 in a study visit to the Institution of the Protector of Citizens Republic of Serbia. The aim of this visit was the establishment and strengthening of mutual cooperation in the area of prevention of torture and protection of human rights persons deprived of their liberty. During a two-day study visit, representatives of the Turkish delegation Abdulmuttalip ZARARSIZ, coordinator of the National Prevention Mechanism (NPM) of Turkey and Çiğdem ÇELİK, expert in this unit, had the opportunity to get to know with the competencies and methodology of the National Prevention Mechanism Republic of Serbia, exchange experiences in the field of prevention of torture, and make a joint visit to closed institutions in Serbia in which persons are or may be deprived of their liberty.

On Thursday, February 28, 2019, the National Preventive Mechanism team made an unannounced visit to the Sremska Mitrovica Penal-Correctional Institution. The main goal of this visit was to get an insight into the situation in the reception department, for which NPM during previous visits found to be overpopulated. Apart from the representatives of the Protector of citizens, representatives of the Provincial Ombudsman and the Lawyers' Committee for Human Rights were also part of the NPM team.

On February 26, 2019, the National Prevention Mechanism (NPM) visited institutions in Kragujevac in which persons are or may be deprived of their liberty. Divided into two teams, NPM visited the Clinical Center Kragujevac - Clinic for psychiatry and Gerontology Center Kragujevac - facility 3 intended for the care of beneficiaries with dementia.

The visits were aimed at monitoring the treatment of patients and beneficiaries at the accommodation in these institutions, as well as reviewing the conditions in which they reside.

On December 5 and 6, 2018, the National Prevention Mechanism (NPM) team made an unannounced visit to PU Sombor, after which it made a report with recommendations.

In order to act upon the recommendation of the NPM to provide for retention rooms meeting the applicable standards for the needs of the PU Sombor and its police stations, PU Sombor has undertaken activities aimed at providing the necessary funds from the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the adaptation of detention facilities .

PU Sombor acted upon the recommended recommendation and secured the presence of police officers in the penitentiary unit Sombor when citizens stay in the premises of the Penitentiary Institution.

Representatives of the National Preventive Mechanism participated at the Round Table "Supporting the Application of Alternative Sanctions in Serbia", organized by the Network of the Committees for Human Rights in Serbia at the Media Center in Belgrade. The Round Table presented the results of the research on the implementation of alternative sanctions in Serbia, which the Network conducted during the 2018. The data and conclusions reached by the Network are published in the publication of the same name, together with the authors' recommendations for improving the application and further development of alternative sanctions.

On 29 January 2019, the National Preventive Mechanism teams visited the Kragujevac District Prison and Police Department, both the headquarters of the PD and the Batočina and Lapovo police stations.

Visits were conducted in order to follow-up the NPM recommendations that were sent after previous visits to these institutions and all officials have fully cooperated with the NPM.
